Green Island places at its center the victims of Taiwan’s White Terror era-the families destroyed by the mass arrests under the Chiang Kai Shek dictatorship and thirty-eight years of martial law. Booklist called Water Ghosts “accomplished and affecting,” while The Boston Globe pronounced it a “notably assured debut.” The novel also confronts the topics of race, gender, sexuality, and class that are embedded in the design and effects of such laws. The novel takes place in the Sacramento Delta in 1928 and employs magical realism to address the trauma that harsh immigration laws enacted upon early Chinese American communities. My debut novel Water Ghosts was published by the Penguin Press in 2009. My creative work is engaged with critical global issues around justice, history, identity and immigration.
